Chapter 06

2006–2007: Launching VKontakte (VK)

6.1 Founding of VKontakte (October 2006)

In late 2006, after graduating from university, Pavel Durov partnered with former schoolmate Vyacheslav Mirilashvili and Lev Leviev to build a modern social networking platform for Russian-speaking users, inspired by the rapid rise of university networks like Facebook in the United States.

The domain `vkontakte.ru` was registered in autumn 2006, with the beta launching on October 1, 2006. Initially, registration was restricted by invitation to verified university students using real names. In late 2006 and early 2007, registration was opened to the general public.

VKONTAKTE EARLY GROWTH PHASES (2006–2008)
[Late 2006] Invitation-only launch for SPbSU & university students
[Early 2007] Open registration to the general public across Russia
[Late 2007] Surpassed 3 million registered users; rapid adoption
[2008-2010] Became the dominant social network in Russia and the CIS

6.2 Key Differentiators: Performance and Simplicity

VKontakte differentiated itself from existing Russian portals and social networks through its clean user interface, fast page load speeds, and integrated features for photo albums, music sharing, and groups. Pavel served as CEO and lead product designer, while a lean engineering team focused on system responsiveness on low-bandwidth connections.
