18.1 The Comprehensive Telegram Chat Architecture

Telegram's communication engine is built upon a distinct multi-tiered architecture that separates personal messaging, group interactions, and public broadcasting into specialized protocols and synchronization workflows.

18.2 Cloud Chats: Multi-Device Synchronization & Client-Server Encryption

Cloud Chats (the default mode for 1-on-1 chats, group conversations, and channels) utilize client-server encryption. When a message is composed on a user device, it is encrypted using the MTProto transport protocol and transmitted to Telegram's cloud infrastructure. Once received and verified, the message is stored in an encrypted cloud database partitioned across data center clusters, and dispatched via push notifications and active socket connections to all other authorized devices linked to the user's account.

This cloud synchronization model allows a user to start writing a draft on a desktop app, continue reading incoming media on a tablet, and reply from a smartphone with zero state friction or local storage dependencies.

18.3 Secret Chats: End-to-End Encryption (E2EE)

Secret Chats represent Telegram's dedicated End-to-End Encrypted (E2EE) communication channel. When two users initiate a Secret Chat, their devices establish a direct cryptographic session using Diffie-Hellman key exchange. The resulting shared encryption key is maintained by the participating devices and is not uploaded to Telegram's cloud for synchronization.

Telegram's cloud servers act as an encrypted blind relay for Secret Chat packets, with zero access to the cryptographic keys required for decryption. Secret Chats do not synchronize to the cloud, cannot be accessed from other devices, and natively support self-destruct timers that purge messages from both physical devices after a designated viewing window.

Beyond 1-on-1 communication, Telegram incorporates specialized models for large-scale communities: - Groups & Supergroups: Support up to 200,000 members with granular admin permissions, threaded topic replies, and automated bot integrations. - Broadcast Channels: Support unlimited subscribers, operating on a conceptual broadcast / Pub-Sub model that pushes updates to millions of followers.
